Facebook Buys Oculus for $2 Billion

Facebook's (FB, quote) buying spree continues after yesterday’s announcement Facebook  will be buying virtual-reality headset company Oculus VR Inc.

Facebook roadshowThe deal is reportedly for $2 billion with 400 million in cash and the remainder in stock as Facebook attempts to pull away from mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets.

Oculus is in the early stages of pushing technology in the wearable hardware.  Early stage in the sense Oculus does not have a shipping product but those have a developer’s kit that plus into a PC for $350.

It does seem with comments like “Mobile is the platform of today, and now we’re also getting ready for the platforms of tomorrow, Oculus has the chance to create the most social platform ever, and change the way we work, play and communicate.” from  Mark Zuckerberg, that Facebook is looking beyond its traditional platform for social and advertising.

Bottom Line: Although Facebook appears to be forward looking in the sense of the next thing to mobile the recent buying spree has yet yielded any profits for Facebook.

The key valuation tool for this company remains the number of eyeballs on Facebook screens and Facebook’s ability to drive advertising to both the desktop and mobile device.
