Mobile Internet applications have made people's lives much more convenient, but Internet companies need to build a platform to help people get access to those apps more easily, Ren Yuxin, the Chief Operating Officer from Tencent, China's Internet giant said Monday.
"Some popular mobile apps have dramatically changed people's lives, for example you can get a taxi during rush hour easily or find out where to eat in any city," Ren said.
"These app companies are called 'Connection companies', because they have connected new technology with traditional life," he added.
"What we need to do is to offer a platform integrating these apps so that the users can gain easier access to these services and build a more convenient life."
Tencent (TCEHY, quote), which is China's (FXI, quote) largest Internet company, has invested in Didi Taxi, Chinese cab booking app, and Dianping, the operator of a Yelp-like website, as part of plans to promote its mobile Internet services this year.
The firm's IM tool WeChat has integrated Didi Taxi into its services, so users are able to use Didi Taxi on WeChat.
"Many people have asked me and my coworkers what exactly Tencent does, since we have so many Internet services, such as an IM tool, website, email and online games. I have been thinking about the same question as well," said Ren. "Recently I came up with a clearer idea about what Tencent is. It will continue to build a platform to connect all."
"In the past, we have reached great success with IM tools such as QQ and Wechat, which have connected people together. Now we are exploring a new area to bridge people's lives and even with the whole world together," he said.
The 2014 Global Mobile Internet Conference opened in Beijing on Monday and will last two days.
Global leaders and influencers convene to discuss how lifestyles are changing through the latest use of mobile technologies, including wearable devices, mobile Internet financing, payment solutions, and mobile entertainment content.
