A clarion is a medieval trumpet that had clear, shrill tones. Trumpets were often uses to get people’s attention when making announcements. We are using “clarion” in the context of making announcements, as well as being thought-provoking when sharing our information and opinions with those who are interested in new investment ideas.
Topic: Country Indexes
The first chart, below, shows the weekly closes of the major bourses since the beginning of 2011, a two-year time-frame. All of the indexes were set to 1.00 as of the close of December 31, 2010.
The big loser shown in the chart is the TSX Venture Exchange which, given its weighting of resource companies, is not surprising. The Shanghai Composite is the second-worst performer, followed by the TSX, the Toyko Nikkei, and the Hong Kong Hang Seng, all in negative territory for the year.
The London FTSE 100 is flat for the year, Germany is up 9%, and the three U.S. exchanges lead the pack, up 12%-14%.
The second chart shows the performance of the same indexes over the past year, since the beginning of January. Similarly, all of the indexes were set to 1.00 as of the close of December 31, 2011.
As it was for the last two years, for the past one year, the same three indexes brought up the rear: the TSX Venture Exchange, the Shanghai Composite, and the TorontoS&P/TSX.
Best showing: the Frankfurt Dax, up 26% this year, with the Hong Kong Hang Seng not far behind at up 20%. Apple-led Nasdaq is up 16%, the S&P 500 up 13%.
After a down-turn into mid-November, global stock markets are putting in a pretty good year-end rally, sparked by improving economics in both the USA and China, and by some stability in the Euro Zone with regards to Greece, Spain, and Italy.
