Billion dollar Unicorns are more evident today than when Noah was filling the ARK. The speed at which companies are becoming uber valuable is flat out amazing. Surprising yes, unless one was smart enough to understand how the internet, and software was connecting people in ways that only few ascertained.
Of course the technology had to catch up with the visionaries of the tech bubble of the late 90's. And then, while people became sidetracked with geopolitics (9/11/01), the awakening of china, euroland, and the speed at which emerging markets (BRICS) created a whole new ballgame.
Mobile and its speed of adoption is something that is creating and breaking business models. The overly used word of disruption is on everyone's mind. Business partnerships proliferate, open code/sharing is becoming the norm and new financing through peer to peer and business to business is catching fire. Old ways and the old guard is dying, one of which is the traditional bond market. Something new is happening and I have some ideas.
As many smart people who have managed billions have said, the times are a changing and the great credit bull market that started in 1982 in the USA and later in other countries has come to an end. As I have posted and commented, where we are in this cycle could be the end of stage 1, nearing stage 2.
Many myths are being shattered, peak oil is one of them. Given new technology the ability to find and exploit oil (USO, quote) and gas (UNG, quote) has never been more prolific. In addition efficiencies in use and alternatives have forever changed the closed system of energy that dominated the past few decades. All of the above energy investing will be needed and will be rewarding for investors who make good choices.
Much in Asia is changing, and it leads me to believe that Japan and the Japanese currency is one to watch as china is ascending in the capital markets. One that warrants a bigger discussion.
Well, time to sit back and watch the elephant of sovereign debt as it tries to squeeze through a door that is shrinking.
Enjoy the show.
