Tesla (TSLA, quote) announced it will update the battery plate with a titanium plate in order to prevent battery fires. The bolt on change is in response from the two Model S fire incidents last year that the media picked up and ran with video of the model S on fire for weeks on end. The fires where caused by road debris when the car ran over it and it the under belly of the car where the batter case site.
The solution is simple with a upgrade to the plate that is now made out of titanium and front end aluminum deflector plates that protects the the battery case from flying road debris hitting the plate head on. Its a low tech solution for a high tech car.
Consumer reports has excellent video explaining the Tesla upgrade. What we cannot find as of this morning what the cost will be to Tesla for the fix. Tesla has announced that all current owners of the Model S will receive the upgrade for free.
