Stealing a phrase from Timothy Leary and adding a twist. The sixties were a tumultuous time and marked a time of rapid change. Today, I think that many people, businesses and government are suffering Futureshock, with its debilitating effect of paralysis, and creative destruction of old guard business power.
As an American Spectator, I watch events in Europe and shake my head watching a slow train wreck where governments, banks, business have had no consensus and threads that linked each other are frayed and beginning to snap. In Asia, the rapid growth of the last three decades have heated up old rivalries and the sense of increased responsibilities on the world stage. As we await the Asian version of a development bank, the ascendance of the Chinese currency the world watches. What will be the outcome of this historic change? Will this be for the greater harmony or will different visions clash?
America, the shining beacon on the hill, is mired in its own paralysis as those who want to maintain a republic and concentrate on leading by example (technology, freedoms, individuality with shared visions. Of many dreamers) are in a battle with, central planners, and one world empire builders.
As a Futures broker, I see similar patterns beginning to coalesce as they did in the sixties. And other eras. Stagflation or inflation must be something to consider as paralysis and legacy costs dominate the near term. Investment strategies should incorporate where we are in this cycle for both businesses and individuals. I think the Bond Market is signaling this. I sense the beginning of a bull market in some physical markets. This doesn't mean that there aren't great opportunities to invest in new companies or some equities worldwide. But investors and traders will have to do their homework and be proactive. New Unicorns will appear in business, technologies will rapidly change medicine, energy, transportation etc. I look forward to the hyper tube or other visions of transit. (Jetsons, Logan’s run)
Until people become or allowed to turn on and embrace a new and brave world. Turmoil will continue to cloud brighter vistas. Let’s hope John Gault and the innovators aren't driven into seclusion in some phony, paranoiac grab for power.
